Starhyke

I thought it would be good to open a thread on the TV page to discuss this aspiring production, so that's just what I did.

Personally, I'm intrigued, but my overwhelming thought is that if Joss Whedon, with everything he had going for him after the success of 'Buffy', and with a spanking new Sci-fi series that was widely acclaimed and actually being aired, couldn't keep 'Firefly' going, how big a task have the makers of 'Starhyke' got ahead of them? The words 'Dead Like Me' spring to mind as well. Sure, it's a comedy, but so is 'Hyperdrive', and as I'm sure they're tired of hearing, that didn't exactly fill the public with enthusiasm for more space-based hi-jinks. I would like to know a lot more about this, and especially see some real footage, rather than musical montages.

Incidentally, the premise of the show is that humanity gets over that whole 'You are erratic, conflicted, disorganised' thing, with the help of some friendly but naive aliens, and promptly take over the galaxy. A race called the Reptids send a device back in time to remedy this, and the only temporal travel-capable human ship is sent to intercept. However, a saboteur on board triggers a smaller version of the device, which does a 'Hugh' on the crew. They redicover emotions, and develop cravings for all manner of things, including chocolate, natch. Much hilarity ensues. Well, hopefully.

In a sense, it's a shame that with broadband technology being as advanced as it now is, shows still have to go around begging for airtime. Imagine if a series could be downloaded from the internet, either for a fee or with advertising to defray costs? In practise, i don't think we're ready for this yet (even Steven King's 'buy a chapter' thing' wasn't popular), but as an alternative to TV execs having a stranglehold on new (ad)ventures?

I must admit that I sincerely hope this one does get picked up soon. I was at a test screening for this show- the cast and crew came to a Stargate Atlantis convention that I went to last year, and we got to see 20 minutes of the pilot episode. It was very funny, and the cast is pretty impressive. Claudia Christian of Babylon 5 fame, Suanne Braun who played Hathor on Stargate SG-1, and Jeremy Bulloch aka Boba Fett in the original Star Wars movies- he plays the ship's doctor, and the charcter is totally mental. As the opening battle scene hadn't yet been completed, we were treated to the director and producer having a popcorn fight down at the front of the cinema, ostensibly to demonstrate that it would be a BIG battle, lol.

I caught Hyperdrive when it was on, and I have to say that Starhyke is WAY better. In the segment we saw that gags came thick and fast and we saw a cut together mix from the other episodes that had the cinema howling with laughter.

The premise sounds simple, but it works. These people have never had emotions before, and seeing them trying to handle them is great- they have no self control whatsoever.

Here's hoping it appears soon!

They're trying to get up to 100,000 veiws to hopefully persuade the networks that it's worth showing, so please have a look and spread the word!

The_Host The concept of 'All-You-Can-Eat' buffets has always appealed to me.

Yep, that's the second trailer (durn, ya just beat me to it!). The CGI looks good, kind of like the beginning of 'Revenge Of The Sith', or a couple of battling capital ships in 'X2: The Threat', for that matter (love that tracer fire).

The website says they're very close to a deal, so fingers crossed...

I can see Leslie Nielson in 'Starhyke', too, but he'd have to play it really straight...

I hope it gets a TV deal, too. A few hundred hits down from a thousand views yet, though. Was it 10,000 they were after..?

I was afraid of this. I thought, from my imperfect recollection, that maybe it was 10,000, which they've just reached. At this rate, 100,000 could be years away, so I hope they aren't relying on that...
