Here is the official statement from The WB.
For the last seven years Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been cornerstones of our network. The sum total of the work done on those shows has produced some of the proudest moments in our history. Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB. We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. In a perfect world, all of these details would be completed before this information went to the press so that we could be definitive about the show's ongoing future. But in any case, we did not want to contemplate this being the last year of Angel without giving the show the option of crafting their own destiny for this character and for this series. David Boreanaz continues to be one of the finest, classiest and friendliest actors we have had the pleasure to work with and we hope that the relationship furthers from here. The same can be said for all the actors and producers on the show.

Noooooooooooooooooooo the ratings had gotten so much better and the show was being made for much less mmoney than last year!
Not fair! And so the one truly great genre series left comes to a close. OK Smallville is decent, and Enterprise has its moments, Alias is only marginally genre.
Nothing has really taken off in the last 2 years.

This is too bad, i'm up to episode 13 of season 5 and it's had some excellent eps this season. Nothing can go on forever though, and there's other stuff to watch.
Smallville is fantastic, and soon enough there'll be new stuff. Genre tv isn't dead

WHAT!!!!!
Are those guys at WB insane?????? they're getting decent ratings for god's sake, do they not know decent television when it bited them on their pathetic butts?, or are they trying to cash in on the reality shows..... okay, i'm furious at this decision, i honestly thought they had one more season left in them....
I'm very, very angry right now, and very, very sad. This show has proved it can survive without Buffy
What the hell am i going to do in Januarys now?

Actually Angel's ratings on the whole are NOT that great, it's very rare for it to break a 4.0 - the WB have cancelled shows that have done higher than that. It doesn't help that it's timeslot is up against one of the current phenomenons of US TV (The OC) but still, I think they were expecting higher this year.
Still,
Still,
Have to remember, there is a chance that UPN might pick the show up, especially if it cancels Enterprise. So even though the WB are cancelling it, the show isn't quite dead yet.
Exactly, let's not write the show off yet. If UPN picked up Buffy then there's avery good chance they'll pick up Angel isn't there?

It would be a shame if this was the last season. Having said that, though, it's always better to go out on top rather than do an X Files and drag the show through decreasingly poor seasons.
Totally, I mean there is a difference from a show being cancelled right out and what has happened here. Hopefully it will get picked up by another network, we'll just have to wait and see.
The only reason I wasn't too distraught about the end of Buffy was because I still had Angel.

Indeedy, in fact part of UPN's contract when they took on Buffy was that if WB cancelled Angel they have first dibs to it.. Don't know if that was applicable in a certain timeframe though.

Same here. I'm hoping UPN picks it up, but somehow i'm not holding my breath

It's a damn shame to see Angel get cancelled just as it was getting its bite back. (Sorry.)
But at least it's going out on a high, instead of the embarassing death throes Buffy spent two seasons writhing through. I think the chances of renewal are about the same as an igloo in the Sahara, but TV movies sound a real and promising possibility.

I'm really surprised by this news, especially the timing. Networks don't usually make these kinds of decisions for the coming year until around May. And it's not as though they're yanking Angel off the air. They're apparently going to finish out the full season.
I'm not sure how Angel has been doing in the ratings, but shows on the WB never get huge ratings because that network just doesn't reach as many households as the bigger networks like ABC, NBC, or CBS. So low ratings by themselves might not be the kiss of death.
My suspicison--and this is just a guess--is that it's not the total audience of Angel that's the problem but the demographics of the audience. I've heard of shows getting canceled that were pulling in a decent amount of viewers--just not the "right" viewers. The WB targets most of its shows to teens. They're really not that interested in anyone over the age of 35. Some WB shows--like Everwood, 7th Heaven, and most likely Angel--pull in a slightly older audience. And maybe a six-year-old show that's pulling in a lot of non-teen viewers is something they're willing to give up to fill that slot with new a new show that will appeal to younger viewers. I don't agree with it, but maybe something like that is going on.

I htink it may also come down to a 'refocusing' of the channel. After Tarzan and Birds of Prey went pear shaped, and their next big project Fearless didnt even get past the pilot stage I read WB were not going to try any more genre series as they were just too high risk.
So i guess that means they see themselves as a channel for teen romance shows, bland sitcoms, and reality tv. This may have left Angel the odd man out in the lineup and they decided to make it a clean break.

Go UPN! Go! Go! Go!
Screwing around with DC and Angel? That's it. I've had it. I now officially hate WB.
Anyhoo, signed nice petition-thingy...

Oddly, though - Joss doesn't seem too bothered. He's quoted in SFX as saying that he's tying up loose ends this season in case there isn't another one.
Be honest - 5 seasons is a good trot for a spinoff genre show, and I for one would much rather see it go out as a great show than tail off like Buffy did with a couple of seriously sub-standard seasons. I pretty much cheered when the final Buffy season was announced, because the show I'd loved had become so much less that it should have been. I love Angel and would hate for that to happen there as well.
Joss has recently been signed to take over New X-Men at Marvel, so I should think his energies will be elsewhere for a time.
I will miss my show a lot, but I'd rather be comforted by rewatching good old episodes than frustrated by watching bad new ones.

Actually the post he made on the Bronze a couple days ago seemed to indicate he was very bothered. More about the timing of the announcement more than anything it seems - yes they have gone into this season thinking it could be the last, but everything they were hearing up until a week ago or so indicated the network were very happy with everything that was going on, and so presumably they had started thinking about a 6th season. Here's the exact post btw:

"Some of you may have heard the hilarious news. I thought this would be a good time to weigh in. to answer some obvious questions: No, we had no idea this was coming. Yes, we will finish out the season. No, I don't think the WB is doing the right thing. Yes, I'm grateful they did it early enough for my people to find other jobs.
Yes, my heart is breaking.
When Buffy ended, I was tapped out and ready to send it off. When Firefly got the axe, I went into a state of denial so huge it may very well cause a movie. But Angel... we really were starting to feel like we were on top, hitting our stride -- and then we strode right into the Pit of Snakes 'n' Lava. I'm so into these characters, these actors, the situations we're building... you wanna know how I feel? Watch the first act of "The Body."
As far as TV movies or whatever, I'm not thinking that far ahead. I actually hope my actors and writers are all too busy. We always planned this season finale to be a great capper to the season and the show in general. (And a great platform for a new season, of course.) We'll proceed ahead as planned.
I've never made mainstream TV very well. I like surprises, and TV isn't about surprises, unless the surprise is who gets voted off of something. I've been lucky to sneak this strange, strange show over the airwaves for as long as I have. I don't FEEL lucky, but I understand that I am.
Thanks all for your support, your community, and your perfectly sane devotion. It's meant a lot. I regret nothing (except the string of grisley murders in the 80's -- what was THAT all about?) Remember the words of the poet:
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the road less traveled by and they CANCELLED MY FRIKKIN' SHOW. I totally shoulda took the road that had all those people on it. Damn."
See you soon."
