I learnt to play the piano and guitar sometime ago when i was at school, kept up the guitar and play every now and then

i would say i was good but people have, rock on me

In chronological order I have tried to play recorder, flute, piana, guitar and bass. Got the best on the recorder I guess I just give up too easily, but I'm not a naturally musical person. The fact that I can't play an instrument or sing really depresses me, I'd love to be able to put music out into the world, even if I didn't make money from it. I've been known to cry when hearing an album because I know that I couldn't do anything like it

i have such a strong urge to be in a band and produce music and entertain people, i mean i'm sure everyone does at one time
but i know lots of people in bands and it really inspires me, but i just lack...motivation? oh i dunno, i mean i'd love to do it, but me being me, i'll never get around to it

I can play flute (got to about Grade 4 I think) and have been singing in a church choir since the age of 11...I even passed the test to become head Chorister...I got to wear a posh ribbon and everything!!!!!! .

And as of the afternoon, I have been learning to play the guitar on my brand new acoustic

I used to play the Clarinet at school but gave it up as the reed thing made my teeth go on edge - YUK!

I've not played with a band for a =very= long time - pressures of work an' all. But a funny thing happened whilst I was on holiday last month...

I can sort of play guitar, I'm a bit out of practice but I like owning them. I have three.

I'm a lot better at Bass Guitar, and played it in a band until very recently. I might not have much theoretical musical knowledge, but I can hold down a good bass line

I am/was a trombonist. Started playing 24 years ago. Last touched in it July this year.

My main involvement was with a Brass Band in my home town. This July saw the retirement of it's founder after 35 years and as a result, the organisation folded (a combination of finding no-one who could replace such a unique person, plus the sorry state of music education resulting in a dwindling membership). Having done so much in my 20-odd year association with the band, I have decided to take a well-earned sabbatical. In July 2003, if I miss it I will find another band to play in, but at the moment I'm enjoying the rest.

When I was younger playing in a Brass Band wasn't a cool thing to do. But, during my time in the band I have toured Switzerland (1983), Israel (1984), Czeckoslovakia (1989 & 1991), Germany (1990), Austria (1992) & Poland (1994). I've seen places, met people and done things that I would never have had the opportunity to do.

Was I any good? That's a different question. I hated taking exams and was forced to take grade 6 when first went to college (to re-take all of my failed O-Levels ). I had a spare slot and decided to take Music, having successfully avioded it all the way through school. Because it was a 1-year course having grade 6 was a pre-requisite. To take the grade 6 practical exam I had to have passed grade 5 theory. I ditched theory lessons years before and in fact hadn't any formal theory qualifications at all. However O-level music was accepted in place of grade 5 theory. I needed one in order to do the other and I had neither - Catch-22. Some negotiation with the college allowed me to take both at the same time and I passed - thankfully! That was in 1986.

I got to Grade 5 on the viola (that's the big violin type thing that every other musician takes the mick out of). I also used to play the piano and the recorder.

Unfortunately, I'm practically tone deaf and I totally sucked at playing music (can't sing a note either). I haven't touched an instrument for about 8 years now I'd love to get a piano, but we don't have the space.

And coming up to 8 years now that i've been playing accoustic guitar, and I got my first electric the other day. Not allowed to open it until christmas though!

I saw you play Guitar in the Guitar Shop in Leeds (*drools* remembering the lovely basses) and you were really very good on guitar! Like Matt Bellamy except different.

As for me here's what i play:
Recorder (i can play greensleeves and some more)
Clarient (Grade 5)
Saxaphone (Grade 3 equivalent)
Piano
Bass Guitar (self-taught)

I play guitar and bass. Been playing for, ooh, nearly 10 years now, and been in a couple of bands. As for proficiency, well, I'm ok, but not great.

I can play the guitar. Started lessons when i was 10, so that was 9 years ago. Not very good though. probably cause i never practiced and stopped having lessons a few years ago.
In primary school, i could play the recorder. and had violin lessons for a year or so. i hated that. It's a very difficult instrument to play.

Erm, Nope can't play a flippin note of anything, BUT, know a good tune when I hear it,and would absolutelylove to be able to play the opening bars to'Wish you were here' by Pink Floyd on guitar......

I was in this lil hick town called Lom Sak in the North of Thailand. The hotel I was staying in for a couple of nights had an outside bar and every night a band would take to the stage and play covers til 1am. So the last night I'm there, I go down for a beer (as you do). Halfway through my first bottle, one of the locals says "You must drink with us!" and presents me this simply huge bottle of beer. Well... would be rude not to really...

An hour and much beer later, we're all best mates (even though only one of them can speak any English and I don't know a single word of Thai). Then, between songs, the keyboardist in the band points at me and announces over the PA "You! You sing for us!" So I put my hands in the air and protest that I can't sing... but I've been known to play a bit of guitar from time to time...

That's enough for them and I am literally dragged up on stage and given this Ibanez with the rustiest strings on the planet. Still, gotta make the best of it... so I do my best Rock-God (tm) run up the neck and finish off with my fave power chord (which is a sorta Em7 diminished thingy played half way up). The bassist's jaw drops open, the drummer is just starring at me and there are hoots of (admittedly drunken) appreciation from the audience. The other guitarist, who was clearly a metal head, is grinning from ear to ear and giving me a big Thumbs Up. So we launch into this Blues/Rock set where each song would begin with them saying "You know Xyz?" where Xyz was either some Thai song or at least English spoken with such a strong accent that I didn't have a clue. So I'd just shrug and join in best I could. I tell ya, I've not had such a blast in ages. I'd forgotten how much fun playing with a band can be.

And yes, they did get me to sing too

Ummmm, well I learnt to play Cornet when I was about 9. But I never kept at it. And then I kinda started playing bass guitar when I was about 18. I was never very good. In fact I haven't even touched it for the last couple of years... I'm a bit like Yally in that I want to just be able to pick up an instrument and play it instantly without having to learn to play.

I used to play piano. I got up to Grade 5 before I gave it up (going through that phase in secondary school where I gave up pretty much everything I'd been doing at junior school!). I also used to play the drums a bit.

If I could learn any instrument now it'd probably be the guitar, because it's the sort of thing that you can take round with you and then pick it up at any time and play something that's immediately recognisable to everyone who's around

Well I can play "Chopsticks" and a couple of other crappy tunes on the piano

I tried to learn the guitar once, but didnt get very far, oooh and the drummer in my school's band said I was "a natural on the skins."

Other than that I guess you could say I'm completly rubbish at all things musical
